On Backing up

[dropcap2]A[/dropcap2]bout twice a week a customer comes in with a computer or a hard disk that has failed. Usually this tends to occur with older hard disks, but sometimes newer ones also. A failed hard disk is when files can no longer be read, and a professional is required to see if the data can be recovered.

Sometimes data is fully recoverable. Sometimes it is not.

In some cases, people are extremely upset because the disk contains photos, business documents or other precious personal data.

Yesterday I saw a customer who had a tragic family loss last year, and was beside himself that he would lose his photos. This experience prompted me to write this brief article as a reminder to always back up data.

If your data is in only one location (for example a single computer or hard disk) it is vulnerable to loss. When the hard disk fails (I say “when” because all hard disks have a limited life span) the data that is stored on it can be at critical risk.

If you care about what is stored on your computer, always back it up to at least one separate disk (external hard drive, dvd’s)

At this point, if the two copies are stored in your house or place of business, the data is still vulnerable to theft or fire. For this reason, the best approach is to have at least one off-site backup as well.

Backups can be automated. The advantage to automatic backups, is that there is no risk of forgetting to back-up and therefore less chance of losing recent data if something goes wrong with one of the copies.

WSCR can assist with this process. Please phone to find out more about our free systems to automate your backups and protect your data.

This is a quick, simple and inexpensive process to set up. If you have any doubts about your existing backup system, now may be a good time to review your practices to ensure your precious memories and business records are safe from loss.

Protect your PC and Laptop from Theft

PREY is free, open source software that will allow you to track down your stolen PC, Laptop or Android Phone.

How it works:

You install a tiny agent in your PC or phone, which silently waits for a remote signal to wake up and work its magic.

This signal is sent either from the Internet or through an SMS message, and allows you to gather information regarding the device’s location.

FEATURES:

Take a picture of the thief with your laptop’s webcam so you know what s/he looks like and where s/he’s hiding. Powerful evidence.

Grab a screenshot of the active session — if you’re lucky you may catch the thief logged into his email or Facebook account!

Fully lock down your PC, making it unusable unless a specific password is entered. The thief won’t be able to do a thing!

If enabled, Prey will attempt to hook onto to the nearest open WiFi hotspot when no Internet connection is found.

Prey uses either the device’s GPS or the nearest WiFi hotspots to triangulate and grab a fix on its location. It’s shockingly accurate.

WSCR uses this software on all its loan machines. Its a must-have for anyone who owns a portable device, and wants it back if stolen.

Beware – Telephone Tech-Support SCAM

A number of customers have approached me in the last few weeks about phone calls they have received from ‘Technical Support’ in regard to ‘a problem on their computer’.

The way the scam works is this:

A customer support representative, claiming to be from a reputable company (ie ‘Microsoft’) rings and states that they have noticed some problems on your machine.

The (fake) problem that has been identified will be something like a “Virus or Trojan infection”.

The ‘support representative’ will then ask you to go to your computer and switch it on.

From there, they will provide instructions on how you can install an application that will provide complete access to your computer

After this, they will show you ‘virus infections’ and other ‘issues’ which they will charge you to fix after getting your credit card details.

There are numerous documented instances of variations of this scam via Google.

For more information, see

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1200200

CAUTION: If someone you don’t know wants you to give them full access to your computer via the internet, chances are its a scam that will put your credit card details and your personal information into the wrong hands.

Postbox – a great email client

Overview

Ive been using email for many years, since the days of Fidonet on dial-up bulletin boards in the 1990’s. Over time, Ive seen email grow and develop, and the quality of email software and web-based services improve. For many years in the late 1990’s and early 2000 I used Outlook, which at that time was the killer application for email, albeit very clunky by today’s standards. After a brief flurtation with Outlook Express, I eventually changed to Mozilla Thunderbird, which has been my email client of choice ever since. This has been a close tie with Windows Live Mail, which I also like very much, but Thunderbird has always edged it out because of its high degree of customisability through add-on support.

Recently I heard about Postbox, from an article on Lifehacker. Postbox is based on Mozilla Thunderbird, but has quite a few useability tweaks. It comes in two versions, Free (lite) and Paid (full).

Having trialled the Full version on my Work Desktop for the last week, I will take the plunge and shell out the minimal $39.95 registration fee. It really is an excellent piece of software. Although not as ‘fully featured’ as Microsoft Outlook, there’s plenty of features there for even the most discerning consumer. In comparison with Outlook, the advantage is that its very fast, and won’t slow down older machines.

The range of add-ons is not as broad as Thunderbird, but there are numerous ‘hand picked’ options available to extend functionality. ‘Out of the box’ my only criticism was that it didnt have a Calendar. A few mouse clicks later I had Lightning intalled, and now its just peachy.

While $39.95 is not quite as good as ‘free’, from a value-for-money standpoint, this is a clear winner in my estimation. Highly recommended for those looking for a robust email client without the bloat of Outlook 2010 and with more features and useability than Thunderbird/Windows Live Mail.

Pioneer One

[message type=”info”]

TV as we have known it for the last 60 years or so is now at the end of its life cycle. The days of being stuck with having to be in front of the box at a particular time to watch content, and of having to sit through advertisements during it, are just about at an end.

[/message]

As a PC repair tech, I see a lot of computers and over time, have seen a massive growth in the number of customers who download media. Years ago, it was only the young and tech savvy up-to-the-minuter’s. Now, its everyone – mums, dads, even grandma’s and grandpa’s who get a lot of their movies and tv shows from the net.

In Australia, we will soon have a faster broadband network, which will make availability of just about any media from anywhere, instantly.

This raises some interesting questions about what will happen with traditional ways of delivering media – cinemas, dvd libraries, tv stations. For example, what would happen to Hollywood if everyone downloaded their movies for free?  What would happen to TV production companies in the same situation? What would be the motivation to make content if no-one paid for it, and how would production companies exist?

One possible answer to this is the notion of donation-view content. Lets say someone downloads a show and just doesnt like it – it was obtained for free, but there’s no obligation to pay because it just wasnt appealing. However, if this person does like the show, they have the option to donate to the company that produced it – and pay what the show was worth in entertainment value. This payment ensures that the company is rewarded for their efforts and can continue to make the sort of content viewers value.

It means that content decisions can be made directly by viewers instead of studio executives.

Pioneer One is a pilot series using this exact model. Produced by VODO, the show is now up to its second episode – funded entirely by viewer donations. The donation amount is open, with a recommended minimum of $5.

I was skeptical of the potential for creating quality viewing from just donated money, but having seen the first 2 episodes, I was actually very impressed. Its a great series, and I ended up happily paying the production company for the entertainment I got from it.

It will be interesting to see what happens from here. Right now, we have a ‘pay up front’ model – we go to the cinema or video shop, and pay them. If the movie was a dud, thats tough luck; we’ve been gamed by the cover art and a slick plot description written by promotioneers wanting to get punters to watch the movie.

This payment model takes the opposite approach – get your media for free. If you like it, you can pay what you think it was worth. If you dont, no charge for your time :)  Good content makes money. Bad content goes by the wayside.

Its a promising concept from a consumer standpoint – lets see where it goes from here….

The episodes can be downloaded via bittorrent. More info at the VODO website.

Turbo-charge Windows Search

[message type=”info”]

Using Windows Search can be time-consuming. If you’re not sure where a file is, and have to search an entire hard drive, the process can take several minutes. If you search for several files a day, this adds up to a lot of lost time. The good news is that searching for files can be done a lot FASTER
